Save Our Wild Salmon National Road Show 2008 Center

One fish, two fish, red fish, no fish?
Last year, just four Snake River sockeye salmon survived their journey from the Pacific Ocean to their ancestral spawning grounds in Redfish Lake in Idaho’s Rocky Mountains — an ancient upstream migration of more than 900 miles inland and 6,500 feet above sea level. Just four fish.

Pacific wild salmon are a national treasure — a nutritious food and a sustainable natural resource. Salmon represent spiritual and physical sustenance to Native American tribes. They connect ocean and river, and provide a source of endless inspiration.

Contact Congress now to save wild salmon! The Snake River is the mighty Columbia’s largest tributary. Together, they were once home to the greatest runs of salmon on the planet. As many as 16 million fish once flooded from the ocean into these rivers each year.

Much, however, has been lost. Dams and habitat destruction have driven salmon toward extinction. On the lower Snake River, four costly dams block salmon from returning to some of the biggest, wildest, highest, coldest, healthiest and best protected habitat remaining in the continental United States.

The federal government wants to continue spending billions of taxpayer dollars on ineffective, illegal plans that won’t protect our salmon. It is time for change. Solutions exist. The fate of our salmon depends on leadership in Congress.

Congress needs to hear from you today. Urge your legislators to save our wild salmon by removing the four costly and outdated lower Snake River dams.

Taking it to the streets
Our Road Show Team
Buster aka SOS communications manager Emily Nuchols, salmon wranglers Bill Cassidy and Nate Grader, and Washington commercial fisherman Ron Richards on hand to kick off the road show at Westlake Center.

It is time for the American people stand up for salmon and steelhead and demand Congress create a truly effective salmon plan for the Snake and Columbia Rivers. This spring, a 25’ fiberglass salmon will hit the road in the Pacific Northwest to travel across the country in a high visibility Road Show en route to our nation’s capitol. The Road Show is geared to highlight the plight of endangered Snake River salmon and the communities, cultures and jobs that depend upon them.

Traveling nearly 10,000 miles through twenty states, this irresistible ambassador from “Salmon Nation” will visit farmers markets and town centers, schools and universities, concerts and festivals, aquariums and zoos to educate the public about the Northwest salmon crisis and encourage people to be part of the solution by delivering a strong message to Congress: Act now or lose them forever.

2008: The time is now
Exploring Fin's interiorDecades of ineffective federal policies and billions of taxpayer dollars have failed to protect salmon and steelhead from declining toward extinction. We are in desperate need of a new approach that is firmly based in both good science and fiscal responsibility. Now is the time for action. Stand up for wild Snake River salmon!
