Business Partnerships

God Blessing the RallySince our founding, Save Our Wild Salmon has worked closely with businesses in the Pacific Coast salmon states of California, Idaho, Oregon, Washington, and Alaska. Many businesses, like tackle shops, fishing guides, and commercial fishermen, depend directly on salmon for their long-term viability. Other businesses, like outdoor retailers and whitewater tour companies, share the common need for free-flowing rivers and overall environmental health with wild salmon. Still other businesses value the quality of life in the Northwest, which is rich in salmon heritage.

So far, more than 800 businesses have signed onto a letter (PDF download, 112 KB) to Congress denouncing the federal government's inadequate plan for salmon recovery in the Columbia River Basin. Many businesses signatories to the letter were related to sportfishing, such as Luhr Jensen and Berkley Tackle Company; or commercial fishermen and seafood-related industries such as Loki Seafood. More than 100 signers were from large outdoor retailers, including Patagonia, Montrail, Teva, and Smartwool. Eight businesses were based in Michigan, seven in New York, nineteen in Colorado, and fifteen in Montana, showing that salmon mean business across the nation. Media around the release of the letter drew even more attention to the value of salmon in the economic bottom line of outdoor and fishing businesses. Unique business partnerships have resulted in a number of exciting projects and fundraising events. Sponsorship by Rainier Mountaineering Inc. spurred a fundraiser called Summit for Salmon. Twelve salmon activists each raised $2,000 or more to summit Mt. Rainier in a guided climb. One of many projects with Patagonia was an auction of outdoor gear during a book reading and signing by David James Duncan.
