Eastern Regional Representative - Washington, DC

SUMMARY: Full-time staff position responsible for Washington, DC-based policy and outreach work for SOS's Columbia & Snake Rivers Campaign, including: coordinating the outreach efforts of national campaign partners to advance Congressional and media strategy and execution, and leading outreach efforts in five target states. The Eastern Regional Representative assures integration of the campaign's DC outreach work with national and northwest outreach, policy and media objectives.

REQUIREMENTS: Bachelors degree in an appropriate discipline, at least five years experience in conservation advocacy and organizing for sizable organizations, and experience with coalition-based campaigns. Position requires experience with diverse groups of people, attention to detail, strong time management and problem solving skills, strategic thinking, excellent communication abilities, and the capacity to juggle competing priorities. Working knowledge of Congress is critical. Experience may substitute for education.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • With Outreach Director, identify and then travel to targeted districts and events in the east and midwest to educate members of Congress, educate and mobilize targeted constituencies, increase campaign visibility, and recruit new spokespeople and volunteers.
  • Coordinate events with national media opportunities, including DC-based rallies, editorial board visits, or other special events and activities in target states.
  • Maintain regular contact with leaders, spokespeople and volunteers in key districts.
  • Facilitate strategic contacts by campaign leaders, influential contacts and volunteers to targeted members of Congress, policymakers, and media (including op-eds, letters to the editor, and local press releases).
  • Work with SOS policy and media staff to refine target states, districts and media markets for national outreach, media and other activities.
  • Assist in staffing the Campaign's Outreach and Policy teams: recruit members, host regular meetings, coordinate with campaign member organizations, and track work assignments.
  • Engage and mobilize national organizations and allies in the campaign and ensure effective access by the campaign to national group memberships, activists, publications and websites to advance Congressional strategy.
  • Work with SOS Policy and Communications staff to produce fact sheets, newsletter articles, letters, and other necessary outreach materials.
  • Create and maintain relationships with targeted national members of Congress and staff.
  • Coordinate and participate in D.C. visits by grassroots activists and campaign leaders from around the country, with particular emphasis on targeted state offices.
